Football legend Rahman Gumbo passes away
Tragic news has emerged from Botswana of the passing of Zimbabwean football legend Rahman Gumbo. The former Highlanders midfielder suffered a fatal heart attack at his home in Palapye on Thursday.
Gumbo collapsed in the presence of his son. He was rushed to a local hospital but his condition did not improve. On Friday evening, medical authorities transferred Gumbo to a larger hospital in Franscistown in an attempt to give him specialized care in the intensive care unit. However, within a few hours of arriving, the football great sadly passed away.
Gumbo’s wife and his assistant Zacharia Muzadzi, with whom he recently worked at Botswana club Morupule Wanderers, were by his side. A distraught Muzadzi confirmed the news, saying “I am shattered” by Gumbo’s sudden and unexpected death.
He was a legend at Bulawayo giants Highlanders, where he established himself as one of the country’s best midfielders in the late 80s and early 90s. All of Zimbabwe football mourns the loss of a true legend who left an indelible mark on the sport. Our thoughts are with Gumbo’s family and friends at this difficult time.
