Residents of Khayelitsha township are mourning after the sh0cking killing of soccer coach Mike Lukhubene. The former coach of teams like Chippa United and Royal AM was fatally shot at a local soccer field on June 11.
After a match had ended, the coach and another man were walking to their car when two men approached them and opened fire, killing them both instantly. Witnesses described a horrific scene, saying the attackers walked right up to the coach and other victim as they lay on the ground, shooting them at close range in an “execution-style” killing. It was clear the attackers intention was to kill them.
The Khayelitsha Development Forum chairman condemned the shooting, saying crime in Khayelitsha is at alarming levels and expressed condolences to the coach’s family. A representative of the taxi union also criticized the violence.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed two men aged 37 and 46 were shot and killed at the soccer stadium but said the motives remain unknown and the suspects who fled the scene after the shooting have not yet been arrested.
The entire community has been left in sh0ck over the tragic loss of the well-known and well-liked soccer coach in such a senseless act of violence.
