Brazen Theft: Maid steals property worth US$1,455 from employer

In a shocking incident that unfolded before the Hwange Magistrates’ Court, a 19-year-old maid, Previous Manhari, was brought before the law on charges of theft. The accused, who had been employed by the complainant, seized an opportunity when left alone at home and made off with property worth USD 1,455 from the employer’s bedroom, packing it into suitcases before disappearing.

The distressed complainant promptly reported the theft to the local police, triggering an investigation that ultimately led to the arrest of the accused in Nyanga. Fortunately, the diligent efforts of the law enforcement officers paid off, resulting in the recovery of stolen property valued at USD 895. Among the items stolen were various clothing articles, perfumes, and an iPad, all of which were successfully retrieved.

During the court proceedings, the accused person pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against her. As a consequence, a sentence of 30 months’ imprisonment was handed down, with four months being suspended for a period of five years. Additionally, eight months of the sentence were suspended on the condition that the accused pays restitution to the victim. The remaining 18 months were further suspended, provided that the accused completes 630 hours of community service.
