A CAR breakdown involving security guards led to a fatal shooting in Gugulethu on Tuesday, 11 June.
According to residents who spoke to Daily Sun, the security guard car experienced mechanical issues in the Ny50 area of Gugulethu, Cape Town.
While the guards were attempting to repair the car, they were ambushed by gunmen.
The attack left one guard dead, and another badly hurt.
“We heard gunshots and upon venturing outside a few minutes later, we discovered two men lying on the ground,” a resident said.
The residents quickly alerted the police and ambulance services but by the time help arrived, one guard had succumbed to his injuries.
“It’s shocking. I believe the gunmen were after the firearms carried by the security guards. We are terrified by the shooting. The security guards were struggling with the car earlier as they tried to fix it,” the resident explained.
Police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident, saying: “The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident in NY 50, Gugulethu on Tuesday, 11 June 2024, where a 38-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded, and another male (security guards) wounded are under investigation.”
“According to reports, the victims’ vehicle broke down and while waiting for assistance, they were approached by unknown suspects who shot them. The 38-year-old male was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel, while the other victim was taken to a medical facility for treatment. The suspects fled the scene with the victim’s service pistols.”
Gugulethu police are now investigating murder and attempted murder cases. Daily Sun.
