In a tragic turn of events, a 27-year-old man from Bulawayo’s Killarney suburb took his own life at the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport on Thursday.
According to the Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube, Cecil Elisha had been scheduled to board a flight to Johannesburg for a medical checkup. However, Elisha delayed returning from the airport’s international departure toilet, causing the flight to be delayed.
When airport security went to investigate, they found Elisha had used a nylon rope to hang himself from the hinge at the back of the toilet door.
The police report indicates that Elisha had intended to travel to South Africa for a medical appointment. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding his tragic death.
The police have urged the public to seek counselling and support when faced with difficulties, rather than resorting to suicide.
