In a horrific act of violence, a Mberengwa man has been convicted and sentenced for a brutal acid attack on his drinking partner.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, 26-year-old Tafadzwa Mpofu, a resident of Village 7 Mutekedza under Chief Mazivofa, appeared before the Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court facing attempted murder charges as defined in Section 189 as read with Section 47(1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
The incident occurred on May 27th, 2024, at the Mutekedza Shops in Mberengwa. Mpofu and the complainant, 29-year-old Riller Ndlovu, had become embroiled in an altercation over snooker tokens while drinking together.
In a shocking turn of events, the accused briefly walked away from the scene, only to return moments later wielding a bottle of acid. Without warning, Mpofu proceeded to pour the corrosive liquid directly onto Ndlovu’s face and head before fleeing the area.
A police report was made leading to the arrest of the accused person. The Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court handed down a stern sentence, sentencing Mpofu to 6 years in prison, with 1 year suspended for 5 years.
