In a flagrant violation of Zimbabwe’s immigration laws, a Chinese national has been arrested, fined, and deported from the country for overstaying his legal welcome.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, 57-year-old Zhang Weihong was residing at the Stone Mining facility in Zhombe when immigration officials conducted a visit on May 29th, 2024. During the inspection, Zhang was unable to produce any valid documentation, such as a passport, permit, or entry certificate, authorizing his continued stay in the country.

Further investigation revealed that Zhang’s previous permit had expired on February 27th, 2024. He was subsequently issued a 14-day visitor’s notice, which lapsed on April 29th. However, Zhang failed to either depart Zimbabwe or extend his authorized stay, leading to his arrest and prosecution.

The Gweru Magistrates’ Court sentenced Zhang to pay a fine of $200 USD and ordered his immediate deportation back to China. This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for violating Zimbabwe’s immigration regulations, as the authorities have demonstrated a firm commitment to upholding the law and maintaining the integrity of the country’s borders.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s swift action in this matter underscores the government’s resolve to ensure that all foreign nationals comply with the necessary legal requirements for entry and stay within Zimbabwe’s territory. This incident sends a clear message that illegal residency will not be tolerated.
