In a disturbing turn of events, a 38-year-old man from Beitbridge has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempted rape. The harrowing incident unfolded on May 15th, 2024, when the perpetrator targeted his own 19-year-old niece.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the victim was on her way to join fellow congregants for prayer on a nearby mountain when the accused emerged from the bushes and demanded to have lula lula with her. The complainant who was carrying her 11 month old baby on her back refused before she untied the baby, put him on the ground and ran away screaming.
The accused person pursued her and tripped her to the ground. He forcibly removed her skirt but she wrestled with him. The accused person hit the complainant on the mouth with a fist and she lost her tooth. The complainant’s church mates heard her scream and ran to the scene where they found the accused person sitting on the complainant’s laps with his trousers dropped below his knees. The accused person fled the scene. A report was made to the Police leading to his arrest.
The Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court wasted no time in meting out a harsh sentence, handing down a 15-year prison term for the attempted rape charge.
