In a tragic turn of events, the death toll from a fatal road accident along the Harare-Mutare Road has risen to five, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported.
According to the latest update from the ZRP, the incident occurred on June 6th, 2024, near the 32-kilometer peg, where a road traffic accident claimed the lives of four people initially. However, the police have now confirmed that one of the 14 injured victims succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
The ZRP has identified two of the five victims as Jerina Nhapi, a 38-year-old female from Buhera, and Beatrice Chihabvu, a 38-year-old female from Rusape Hospital. Authorities have confirmed that all the victims in this tragic accident have now been identified.
In a significant development, the ZRP has stated that the driver of the Freightliner truck involved in the accident, Pardon Tichaona Sungai (31), has surrendered himself to the police on June 7th, 2024, allowing the due legal process to take its course.

UPDATE ON A FATAL ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT ALONG HARARE-MUTARE ROAD
Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s press statement released on 07th June 2024 in connection with the fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 32 kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road near Mutangadura on 06th June 2024 at around 1250 hours in which four people were killed while 14 others were injured.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports that one of the 14 injured victims succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals bringing the death toll to five.
Two of the five victims were identified by their next of kin as:
Jerina Nhapi (38), a female adult of Buhera.
Beatrice Chihabvu (38), a female adult of Rusape Hospital.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that all the victims who died in the road traffic accident have all been identified.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that the Freightliner truck driver, Pardon Tichaona Sungai (31) surrendered himself to the Police on 07th June 2024 for the due process of the law to take its course.
