In a shocking display of violence, two men from Chipinge have been charged with murder after a dispute over stolen meat during a drinking session allegedly resulted in the death of their companion.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, Munotambura Gwinji (42) and Noah Mavhiye (46) are facing murder charges under Section 47(1)(a) (b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
The incident occurred on June 4th, 2024, in Dambamuromo village, Chief Musikavanhu. The now-deceased, Ndakawanika Nzwisisai Basera, was drinking beer with the accused when he accused them of stealing his meat, sparking a heated argument that quickly escalated.
Court documents allege that Basera struck Gwinji and Mavhiye multiple times on the head and back with a pestle before the pair overpowered him. Gwinji is said to have then hit Basera twice on the head, while Mavhiye assaulted him with a wooden log and booted feet.
The violent confrontation was only brought to an end when one Hellen Mlambo, intervened and restrained the accused men. However, the damage had already been done, as Basera fell unconscious and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Chipinge General Hospital.
Gwinji and Mavhiye have been remanded in custody as the case proceeds, with the National Prosecuting Authority urging the public to resolve disputes peacefully and avoid violence.
This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise when disagreements spiral out of control, underscoring the critical need for constructive conflict resolution.
