In a tragic turn of events, a Gokwe woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the harrowing crime of selling her own newborn baby. The woman, who pleaded guilty to charges of violating the Trafficking in Persons Act, committed the heinous act just two days after giving birth to her son.
The disturbing details emerged in a Harare courtroom, where the state successfully proved that the accused had connived with an accomplice to sell the infant on June 26, 2023, in Johannesburg, South Africa. Months later, in October 2023, the accomplice smuggled the child into Zimbabwe.
The accused woman’s downfall came when she returned home and tried to reclaim the child after learning of her accomplice’s arrest.
