LELETHU Pasiya, the mother of three young children, was on her way to work at Ngcobo Spar in the Eastern Cape when the wall of Judy’s shop fell on her last Friday, 10 May.
She was the family’s breadwinner, looking after her siblings, children and parents as she was the only person working.
According to her sister Ziyanda Pasiya, the family has lost its pillar, and things will not be the same.
Ziyanda told Daily Sun on Wednesday, 15 May, during a memorial service of the five people who died on Friday, Lelethu was the last born.
“She was coming from home, going back to work at 1pm when the wall fell on her,” she said.
“She used her salary to supplement our mother’s old age grant. Now, we’re deeply hurt by the incident. Our lives will never be the same again.”
Dr AB Xuma Municipality mayor, Siyabulela Zangqa, said as the municipality worked with local funeral parlours, they would arrange the funerals of the five people.
“Funeral parlours have agreed to do the funeral service free of charge, and local businesses have donated R20 000 to each family. The money is not for the funeral as everything will be catered for,” he said.
He said families will use the money for other expenses.
“We visited all the families and saw poverty these families live under. Some of the families struggle to bury loved ones as they have nothing.
“One of the victims is a mother who lost her husband a month ago, and now her children are all alone. We asked the Department of Social Development to do a comprehensive report so that we can intervene,” said Zangqa. Daily Sun.
