Tragic incident in Epworth: Father accused of poisoning young child, escapes hospital
In a disturbing turn of events, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is appealing for information to assist in locating a suspect who allegedly forced his young child to consume poisoned buttermilk maheu, leading to the child’s tragic death.
According to the authorities, the incident occurred on January 29th, 2024, at a residence in the Garan’anga suburb of Epworth, Harare. The suspect, identified as Tinashe Nyamutambo, aged 22, is said to have been involved in a domestic dispute with his wife when he committed the horrific act.
“The suspect allegedly forced his child (2) to drink buttermilk maheu which was laced with rat poison following a domestic dispute with his wife,” police said on X.
“Subsequently, the suspect drank the poisoned maheu and was referred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals together with the child for treatment.”
Tragically, the child succumbed to the poisoning while receiving medical care at the hospital on January 31st, 2024. The suspect, however, managed to escape the hospital, and his current whereabouts remain unknown.
The ZRP is now urgently appealing to the public for any information that could assist in locating the suspect.
