Leaving running vehicles unattended leads to theft in Harare
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern advisory to the general public, urging them not to leave their vehicle engines idling if they need to step away from their vehicles.
This cautionary message comes in the wake of a recent incident of motor vehicle theft in Eastlea, Harare on May 10, 2024. In this particular case, an Orange Proton Gen 2 GLS vehicle with the registration number ADR 5543 was stolen.
According to reports, the unfortunate victim had momentarily disembarked from his vehicle, leaving the engine running, while he went to open the gate. Seizing this opportunity, an unidentified individual swiftly entered the vehicle and swiftly drove away, leaving the owner in distress.
In light of this incident, the ZRP is appealing to the public to remain vigilant and avoid leaving their vehicle engines idling when they step out of their vehicles, even for a short time. Such situations provide an invitation for potential thieves to exploit the opportunity and make off with the vehicle.

By working together and reporting any suspicious activities or individuals, members of the public can assist law enforcement in apprehending the culprits and preventing similar incidents in the future.
