Man sentenced to 2 years in prison for illegal gold panning in national park

A recent incident involving illegal gold panning in a national park has led to the conviction and sentencing of a 30-year-old man.

Chrispen Muroro was found guilty by a Karoi Magistrate and has been sentenced to two years in prison for prospecting for gold without a license, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).

On March 9, 2024, game rangers from Matusadona National Park discovered Muroro along the Ume River, engaging in unlawful gold panning. The accused was promptly apprehended at the scene. During the court proceedings, Muroro pleaded guilty to the charges, leading to the imposition of the mandatory penalty of two years’ imprisonment.
