A Toyota Funcargo car driver died on the spot while three passengers escaped unhurt after the vehicle veered off the road and overturned when he tried to avoid hitting a pothole near Zvishavane town on Tuesday evening.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the fatal accident occurred at around 8pm along the Masvingo-Mbalabala road near Zvishavane.
“The deceased was identified as Anesu Rairai Zhou (29) of Madubeko Village, under Chief Mazvihwa, Zvishavane. It is said that Zhou was driving a Funcargo vehicle from Mberengwa towards Zvishavane with three passengers on board,” said Insp Mahoko.
He said on approaching the 101km-peg near Zvishavane, Zhou tried to avoid hitting a pothole resulting in him losing control of the vehicle which veered off the road and overturned before landing on its roof.
“Zhou sustained head injuries and died on the spot whilst other three occupants escaped without injuries,” he said.
