In an incident in Dzivaresekwa, an unidentified man suspected of being intoxicated crashed his vehicle while attempting to escape from the police. The incident occurred as the man was drinking in public near some shops in the neighbourhood. Local law enforcement has been actively apprehending individuals engaged in public drinking at unauthorized locations during the Easter holidays.
According to a witness known as Carter, the man was consuming alcohol outside a bar when the police arrived to make an arrest. In a bid to evade capture, the suspect hastily entered his Vitz car and sped away. The pursuing officers gave chase along Boterekwa Street until the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a wall. The man was subsequently apprehended.
“He immediately got into his Vitz and sped off.
“The officers started chasing him along Boterekwa Street and he eventually lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a wall.
“He was arrested and it is also being said that he broke one of his legs during the crash,” said Carter.
While some residents expressed their dissatisfaction with the high-speed pursuit, citing concerns for the safety of children playing on the streets, they acknowledged the necessity for police to carry out their duties. However, they emphasized the need for a balanced approach, particularly in the densely populated areas where various activities take place.
“We have children who play on the streets and it is now dangerous because they can be hit by cars during these speed chases.
“We are not saying the police must not do their job, but this issue of racing with thieves has to be addressed, especially on these streets of the ghetto, which will be filled with people doing various activities,” Tapiwa Sibindi, a resident, told HMetro.
