A Police Detective Assistant Inspector and Member In Charge Administration at Criminal Investigations Department in Masvingo has been arrested for soliciting US$500 from a Mberengwa businessman.

Pedias Chinenere (48), allegedly approached the complainant Azael Hwingwiri at Bherera Mine, Mberengwa.

He claimed the Commissioner General of Police, Godwin Matanga, was visiting the province and they were sourcing donations towards his visit.

Hwingwiri handed the detective US$500.

On March 24, Hwingwiri received a phone call from one Memory Phiri, who advised him to give the same detective another US$200, as part of the same donation.

Hwingwri then advised the mine director, only identified as Moyo, who requested that they meet at CBZ Masvingo, where he would hand them the money.

When the two met in Masvingo, they contacted Chinenere, who said he had already left Masvingo for Gweru.

The two then filed a report at CID Midlands Headquarters who then set a trap for Chinenere.

Chinenere, who was driving an unregistered white Nissan AD van, was trapped using money he received at the Midlands Hotel.

The money was recovered from his pair of trousers leading to his subsequent arrest.

Chinenere is being charged with criminal abuse of duty and is expected to appear in court soon.
