In a recent court case, a 45-year-old man named Deon Charles Fernandes was sentenced to 10 years in prison for vandalizing and stealing TelOne cables. The trial took place before Harare Magistrate Ruth Moyo, where Fernandes pleaded not guilty.
The complainant in this case was TelOne, represented by Benard Nyamidzi, a 52-year-old loss control officer at the parastatal. A state witness named Eddie Mambo testified that he witnessed Fernandes folding TelOne copper cables and placing them in a satchel. Mambo further stated that Fernandes attempted to flee the scene after being caught red-handed stealing the drop cables.
According to the prosecution, on February 2 of this year, Fernandes stole drop cables that belonged to TelOne. Mambo, who spotted the accused in the act, confronted him, leading to Fernandes’s attempt to escape. However, Mambo successfully apprehended him.
Following the trial, Prosecutor Nomsa Kangara presented the evidence, and the court found Fernandes guilty of the charges. Consequently, he was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment for his involvement in the vandalism and theft of TelOne cables.
