An 18-year-old man has been found guilty of raping his nine-year-old niece and has been handed a 15-year prison sentence, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).
In October, the accused committed the heinous act on two separate occasions while he was left in charge of the young girl, along with two other children. The incident came to light on February 20, 2024, when the victim’s mother heard her daughter crying and discovered the accused in the act of raping her on the dining room sofa.
Following the traumatizing discovery, the victim’s mother immediately reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of the perpetrator. The young girl bravely narrated the distressing events to her mother, which provided crucial evidence for the case.
In response to this tragic incident, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe has issued a statement urging the public to exercise caution when entrusting the care of their children to others. The NPAZ emphasizes the importance of being mindful and vigilant in selecting responsible individuals to safeguard the well-being of children.
It is essential to address such acts of violence against children and ensure that the perpetrators face appropriate legal consequences for their actions. The conviction and sentencing of the accused serve as a reminder of the gravity of such crimes and the commitment of the authorities to protect the vulnerable members of society.
