Gweru man arrested for assaulting wife over contraceptive use
A 39-year-old man from Gweru found himself behind bars after violently attacking his wife for taking contraceptives during the night to prevent pregnancy. The accused, Rabson Machaka, also accused his wife, Linda Wasara (38), of being unfaithful. The Gweru magistrate, Nixon Mangoti, found Machaka guilty of domestic violence.
As a result, Machaka was sentenced to three years in prison. However, the sentence was conditionally suspended, and he was instead ordered to fulfil 140 hours of community service as punishment.
According to court documents, on January 18, Machaka and Wasara went to bed without any prior disagreement. Wasara took her regular family planning pills, but this action triggered an unfounded accusation from her husband. Machaka claimed she had consumed an excessive amount of the tablets and accused her of infidelity.
In a fit of rage, Machaka assaulted his wife using his open hands and fists, delivering blows all over her body. The incident resulted in his arrest and subsequent conviction for domestic violence.
