A 20-year-old resident of Hillside suburb in Bulawayo has made his court appearance, charged with culpable homicide following a tragic incident where he allegedly struck four pedestrians with his vehicle, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.
Warren Meares Jeremy, the defendant in the case, pleaded not guilty during the proceedings before Bulawayo magistrate Themba Chimiso. The court remanded him out of custody until March 5th for the continuation of the trial.
According to the state’s allegations, the incident took place on November 15, 2022, at approximately 2 am. Jeremy was driving a Toyota Vitz along 12th Avenue extension with a single passenger in the vehicle. As they approached a local college, Jeremy lost control of the car, veering into a group of pedestrians walking along the road in an eastward direction.
Tragically, two of the pedestrians were pronounced dead upon their admission to United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH), while the remaining two suffered severe injuries. Jeremy and his passenger sustained minor injuries in the accident, and the vehicle sustained damage to the bonnet, with the windscreen shattered.
According to the State, the accident was caused by speeding, failure to stop or react reasonably when an accident or collision seemed imminent, and failure to keep a proper lookout in the circumstances.
