Arrest made in connection with killing of policeman in Chegutu
Authorities have made a significant breakthrough in the case involving the suspected killer of a police officer stationed at Pfupajena Police Station in Chegutu. The apprehended individual, identified as Tinotenda Tatenda Nyika (20), stands accused of fatally attacking and stealing the cellphone of Elisha Munengerwa (35), the officer who tragically lost his life in the incident.
Munengerwa had been deployed at Kaguvi Primary School polling station for a by-election held on February 3. After sustaining a deep cut on his left arm, Munengerwa was rushed to the hospital but tragically passed away upon admission. The assailant, armed with a homemade knife, allegedly stabbed Munengerwa before absconding with a Techno Camon cellphone belonging to the officer.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national police spokesperson, provided details of the arrest, stating that on February 6, detectives from CID Chegutu acted on received information that led them to recover the stolen cellphone from a local individual. Subsequently, Tinotenda Tatenda Nyika was apprehended in connection with the crime.
The sequence of events leading to the arrest began in the early hours of February 3 when Farai Chifodya, a witness, heard groaning sounds while sleeping inside his tuck shop. Upon investigating, Chifodya discovered the injured and bleeding police officer lying on the ground. Acting swiftly, he reported the incident at Pfupajena Police Station.
Upon arriving at the scene, the responding officers were devastated to find that the injured individual was their colleague, Munengerwa. They immediately rushed him to the hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries upon arrival.
