In a deeply disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, Bulawayo Police have apprehended a 59-year-old man on charges of allegedly raping a one-year-old baby girl. The accused, identified as Phathisani Thebe from Banda homestead in Hope Fountain, was taken into custody on the morning of January 24, 2024.
According to a statement from Bulawayo Police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube, the harrowing discovery came to light when the mother of the victim returned home from town after running errands. Distressed by her child’s inconsolable cries, she began changing the baby’s nappies, only to make a horrifying discovery – evidence of ƨǝxuɑl assault.
Inspector Ncube further revealed that during the subsequent investigation, the victim’s 14-year-old sister provided crucial information. She stated that the suspect, known to the family as a helper, had taken the baby away for approximately 30 minutes before returning her. This revelation played a pivotal role in the swift apprehension of the suspect.
Upon reporting the incident, the case was immediately opened at Hillside Police station, leading to the prompt arrest of Phathisani Thebe. The law enforcement authorities acted swiftly and decisively in response to this heinous crime against an innocent and defenseless child.
