Justice Priscilla Chigumba re-appointed as Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson
In a significant development, Justice Priscilla Chigumba has been re-appointed as the Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for a six-year term. The re-appointment, set to commence on February 1, was confirmed in a letter from the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Martin Rushwaya.
Rushwaya’s letter stated, “I am pleased to advise that His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Comrade Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has, in terms of section 238(5) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe (No.20) Act 2013 re-appointed you as the chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission for six years with effect from 1 February 2024.”
Justice Priscilla Chigumba, who initially assumed the role in 2018, has previously overseen two disputed harmonized elections. With this renewed contract, she will continue to lead the commission and will be responsible for conducting the electoral cycle in 2028.
