Taxi driver robbed of car and cash by armed robbers in Bulawayo

In a distressing incident near Mzilikazi High School in Bulawayo, two individuals wearing balaclavas and armed with weapons allegedly attacked and robbed a taxi driver. The robbery took place on Tuesday at approximately 11:30 pm.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the unfortunate incident occurred when the taxi driver, Donald Mafudzire (50), had just dropped off a client and was returning to the city center. As he was driving, he encountered large stones obstructing the road near North End shops.

The taxi driver stopped his vehicle, leaving the keys in the ignition, and stepped out to clear the stones. It was during this moment that two individuals, their faces concealed by balaclavas, approached him. They pointed a gun at his head, threatening him with harm if he made any noise. Despite the terrifying situation, Mafudzire remained composed and did not raise an alarm.

The robbers forcefully pushed the frightened taxi driver back into his vehicle and drove towards Mzilikazi suburb. They eventually stopped in a secluded area near Mzilikazi High School. Displaying their weapons, one of the robbers aimed a gun at Mafudzire’s face while demanding money. The taxi driver handed over US$20 and R5. Unsatisfied, the robbers then assaulted him and demanded additional funds. Subsequently, they ordered him to exit the vehicle before making their escape in his car.

Mafudzire promptly reported the incident to Khumalo Police Station. Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the deputy police spokesperson for Bulawayo, confirmed the robbery and appealed to the public for any information that could aid in the apprehension of the perpetrator.

“We are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of a man who robbed a taxi driver of his car and cash. Anyone with information may contact any nearest police station,” Assistant Inspector Msebele stated.
