Social media sensation “Detective Kedha” faces bail hearing following theft arrest
Tafadzwa Chidawa, widely known as Detective Kedha due to his popular videos capturing encounters with alleged thieves in Harare’s central business district, is set to appear in court tomorrow for a bail hearing. The former policeman was initially brought before the court on Tuesday, facing charges of stealing a vehicle valued at US$12,000 in South Africa and smuggling it into Zimbabwe.
In addition to the theft case, Detective Kedha has two other pending fraud cases against him. The State alleges that he stole a Toyota Hilux double cab in December 2022, smuggling it into Zimbabwe and fraudulently registering it with the Zimbabwean registration number AGE 6745. The vehicle was subsequently sold to Ms Melody Kufakwemba for US$12,000.
However, on January 2 of the following year, the vehicle was intercepted by the police while being driven by Kufakwemba’s son-in-law. Upon verification of the registration, it was discovered that the vehicle had been fraudulently registered. Further checks through Interpol’s international database of stolen vehicles confirmed that the car had been reported stolen in South Africa.
The second count against Detective Kedha involves an alleged incident on July 4 of the previous year. It is claimed that he received US$8,500 from Kufakwemba for the purchase of a Nissan Caravan, promising to import the vehicle but failing to deliver. Subsequently, he convinced her to provide additional funds to secure a Toyota Hilux.
Mr Anesu Chirenje appeared on behalf of the State.
