Mother and son granted bail in fatal assault case

A 30-year-old woman, Norgerty Jekeseni, and her 14-year-old son have been granted bail after allegedly being involved in the fatal assault of a suspect accused of stalking Jekeseni’s daughter. The duo appeared in Chegutu Magistrates Court on Monday and were granted US$100 bail. They are set to return to court on February 5, 2024, facing murder charges.

Initially, the minor could not be released into the custody of a guardian due to legal restrictions outlined in section 135 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act. However, the Prosecutor-General intervened and requested the minor be released to a guardian. Following this, Chegutu magistrate Joseph Mundondo granted them bail, and the minor was released on January 23, 2024, after spending a night in custody.

According to court documents, the first accused, whose identity is protected due to their age, allegedly struck the head of the deceased, Leeroy Munyanyi, a juvenile, against a cement surface. “His mother acted in complicit and slapped the deceased several times on the face with open hands after the deceased was accused of stalking and f0ndling the sister to the accused juvenile, her daughter,” stated the State papers.

The accused are being represented by Unite Saizi from Saizi Law Chambers.
