Chivhu teacher faces fraud charge for alleged ZWL$2 million grocery theft

A Chivhu teacher found himself in the hot seat after being accused of stealing groceries valued at a staggering ZWL$2 million from a local supermarket. The suspect, identified as Fortunate Nhundu, appeared before the Chivhu Magistrates Court last Friday, charged with fraud.

Nhundu, who teaches at Manhize Primary School, vehemently denied the allegations, entering a plea of not guilty. He will be back in court on January 18 for trial.

According to the State’s account, the incident took place on December 24, 2023, at approximately 5 p.m. Nhundu allegedly entered Pick ‘n Pay supermarket armed with a used receipt for groceries. With cunning precision, he proceeded to fill an entire trolley with items that matched those listed on the receipt.

At around 5:30 p.m. that same day, the accused purportedly exited the premises, brazenly clutching the cart laden with the ill-gotten goods, without making any attempt to pay for them. However, the audacious act did not go unnoticed, as an astute security guard at the supermarket promptly apprehended him.

During the subsequent investigation, authorities managed to recover all the stolen merchandise, which was estimated to be worth an astonishing ZWL$1,840,378.90.
