Families left devastated as house set ablaze amidst ownership dispute
In a harrowing incident suspected to be fueled by domestic violence, a man from Murombedzi township unleashed chaos on Christmas Day as he ran amok, smashing windows and setting fire to a family house. The destructive rampage resulted in the loss of property, clothes, blankets, and food supplies for six families, including those who were renting at the same residence.
The perpetrator, identified as Clayton Mudehwe, allegedly engaged in a heated argument with his wife over ownership rights to the house before escalating the dispute to a destructive level. Witnesses reported that around 10 pm on Christmas Day, Mudehwe proceeded to shatter the windows of the entire house before igniting the property using petrol.
The repercussions of this incident were felt deeply by the affected families, who lost not only their material possessions but also their sense of security. However, in the midst of the tragedy, a ray of hope emerged as Justice, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Cde Ziyambi Ziyambi, extended a helping hand to the distraught families. Minister Ziyambi generously donated food items and blankets to alleviate their immediate needs.
Expressing her concern over the prevalence of domestic violence, Proportional Representation Councilor for Zvimba, Ms Denicah Makota, issued a stern rebuke against such acts while urging couples to seek amicable resolutions to their conflicts. Assistant District Coordinator, Mr Walter Hwaira, commended Minister Ziyambi for his swift response to the distress call, applauding his empathy and support for the affected families.
Among the affected families were Ms Elizabeth Chirau and Millie Muzambi, who were renting at the house. They recounted their narrow escape from the flames, expressing gratitude for their lives but mourning the loss of their belongings. Chirau and Muzambi acknowledged that without their quick thinking and escape, the outcome could have been much more tragic.
