Tragic accident shatters Christmas celebration as grandfather accidentally shoots grandson
The festive spirit turned to heart-wrenching grief at the Nyawasha homestead in Mutoko, as a joyful Christmas celebration took a devastating turn when Dominic Nyawasha (52) accidentally shot his own grandson. The tragic incident unfolded on December 24, leaving the family in shock and the community grappling with the profound loss.
Appearing before Magistrate Titus Makunike at the Mutoko Magistrates Court, Dominic Nyawasha faced a culpable homicide charge, as the details of the harrowing accident were brought to light. The State, represented by Chipo Munemero, presented the sequence of events that led to the unfortunate incident.
According to the State’s account, on the fateful day, Dominic Nyawasha was enjoying a beer with his son, the father of the victim, at their residence in Mutoko. Spotting crows perched on a nearby Zesa powerline, Nyawasha decided to take aim and shoot them with his gun. However, in a tragic twist of fate, his shot missed the intended target and struck his unsuspecting grandson instead, causing fatal injuries.
The news of the accident sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community, leaving neighbours and relatives grief-stricken. Christmas, a time typically filled with joy and celebration, was instead marked by sorrow and mourning in the Nyawasha household.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with firearms and the need for responsible handling.
