Man faces attempted murder charge after attacking police officer with sword
In a harrowing incident, a 50-year-old man identified as Gilbert Bvongodza appeared before magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka, facing charges of attempting to kill a police officer using a sword.
The accused was remanded in custody until December 27 for a bail hearing.
During the court proceedings, Bvongodza claimed that he always carries two swords for personal protection. He argued that he had attacked the police officer in self-defence after the officer approached him aggressively.
According to State prosecutor Anesu Chirenje, the incident took place on December 19 following a heated altercation between Bvongodza and the police officer. The exact details of the disagreement remain undisclosed.
In an unrelated case, two individuals, Carrington Nhliziywana (38) and Phillip Chigusira (29), were also brought before magistrate Chakanyuka, facing charges of motor vehicle theft. They were remanded in custody until December 28 for a bail application.
Chirenje alleged that on November 26 at around 2 am, the complainant parked his Honda Fit vehicle in Harare’s central business district and left it unattended. Seizing the opportunity, Nhliziywana and Chigusira reportedly used duplicate keys to drive away with the vehicle discreetly.
On December 18, the vehicle’s owner spotted his stolen car being driven by the two suspects in Graniteside, Harare. Swiftly taking action, the owner promptly alerted the police, leading to the arrest of Nhliziywana and Chigusira.
The court proceedings shed light on the increasing prevalence of crimes involving violence and theft in the region. The cases highlight the need for enhanced security measures and the urgency to address such criminal activities effectively.
