Manhunt underway for gas shop operator after fatal explosion in Chiredzi

Authorities in Masvingo have launched a manhunt for a gas shop operator in southern Chiredzi following a devastating explosion that tragically claimed the lives of two individuals and left three others with serious injuries. The incident, which occurred last week, was allegedly caused by a gas leak from one of the supply tanks belonging to the suspect, Garfield Mafanele.

The explosion not only resulted in the loss of two lives but also caused significant damage to six tuckshops and their contents. The victims have been identified as Nerisa Chauke (23), who passed away near Ngundu, and Simbarashe Mufandirwa, who succumbed to his injuries in the Nyanda area while being transported to Masvingo Provincial Hospital. Three additional individuals remain hospitalized in critical condition.

Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, the Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, confirmed that a manhunt is currently underway to locate Mafanele. It is anticipated that he will face charges of culpable homicide once apprehended.

“The whereabouts of the gas shop owner (Mafanele) are still unknown, and we are tracking him down,” Inspector Dhewa stated.

“The long arm of the law will soon catch up with him, and we will charge him with culpable homicide.”

As the search intensifies, authorities are focused on ensuring that justice is served for the victims and their families. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures and proper maintenance in handling potentially hazardous materials.
