Bulawayo teacher faces culpable homicide charge after allegedly assaulting student who later died
A harrowing incident at Hamilton High School has left the community in disbelief as a teacher stands accused of severely punching a student who tragically passed away at a local hospital.
Gcinani Nyathi, a 40-year-old educator, appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Vivian Ndlovu, where he pleaded not guilty to a charge of culpable homicide. He has been remanded in custody until January 4, 2024.
According to court proceedings, Nyathi reportedly became infuriated when he noticed one of his Form Two pupils, Nkosiyabo Thabethe, dozing off during a lesson. Unaware of Thabethe’s medical condition and throbbing headache, he accused him of failing to do the homework that he gave them. Witnesses claim that Nyathi confronted the young boy without inquiring about his well-being and proceeded to deliver multiple punches to his head.
Despite the student’s cries for help, no one came to his aid as the assault continued. Thabethe, overwhelmed by pain and distress, remained in the classroom, clutching his head while tears streamed down his face. As his condition deteriorated rapidly, concerned individuals rushed him to Mpilo Central Hospital for urgent medical attention. Tragically, the young boy passed away shortly after being admitted to the healthcare facility.
Following the heartbreaking incident, local police officers were alerted and subsequently arrested Nyathi. The accused teacher now faces a culpable homicide charge, highlighting the devastating consequences of his alleged actions.
The incident has sparked outrage within the community, raising concerns about student safety and the responsibility of educators to provide a nurturing environment for their pupils. The tragic loss of a young life has cast a somber shadow over Hamilton High School, leaving students, parents, and staff grappling with grief and questioning the circumstances that led to this devastating outcome.
