In a recent development, Pedzai Sakupwanya, the Zanu PF candidate, has emerged as the uncontested winner of the Mabvuku-Tafara Constituency seat. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) announced today that the only other candidate, Kufahakutizwi Febion Munyaradzi from CCC, had been disqualified by the High Court.
According to Mr. Utloile Silaigwana, the Chief Election Officer of ZEC, the candidature of Kufahakutizwi Febion Munyaradzi was set aside by a High Court Order (HCH7543/23), following the press release issued by the commission on November 7, 2023.
With only two candidates nominated for the Mabvuku-Tafara National Assembly constituency by-election, Pedzai Sakupwanya of Zanu PF emerged as the sole eligible candidate. Consequently, the by-election scheduled for December 9, 2023, in that constituency has been canceled.
The official statement from ZEC further declares Pedzai Sakupwanya as the duly elected member of the National Assembly for Mabvuku-Tafara Constituency, effective from December 9, 2023.
“Since there were only two candidates nominated for the Mabvuku-Tafara National Assembly constituency by-election, Sakupwanya Pedzai of Zanu (PF) is the sole candidate that was duly nominated, hence there will be no by-election in that Constituency on 09 December 2023.
“Consequently, the public is hereby notified that Pedzai Sakupwanya of Zanu (PF) has been duly elected member of the National Assembly for Mabvuku-Tafara Constituency with effect from 9 December 2023,” reads the statement.
