Man arrested for allegedly raping mentally challenged woman at his homestead
In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a 23-year-old man from Mbembesi in Matabeleland North province has been apprehended and brought before the courts on charges of raping and impregnating a mentally challenged woman.
The distressing incident occurred when the victim visited the accused’s homestead for a haircut.
The accused, identified as Bongani Tshuma, appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Sibonginkosi Mlotshwa to face a charge of rape. Although he was not required to enter a plea, he was remanded in custody until November 29th.
According to the prosecution, the alleged incident took place earlier this year, although the exact date remains unknown. The victim, whose identity is being protected, visited Tshuma’s home seeking a simple haircut. Unfortunately, she found herself alone with the accused.
It is alleged that Tshuma proceeded to attend to the victim’s hair, but upon completion, he took hold of her hand and forcibly led her into his bedroom. Once inside, he reportedly closed the door and proceeded to undress the vulnerable woman before ƨǝxuɑlly assaulting her.
Throughout the ordeal, the victim valiantly resisted her attacker, but the accused’s physical strength overpowered her efforts. Disturbingly, she screamed for help, yet no one came to her aid, leaving her utterly defenceless.
Following the harrowing assault, the victim returned home without disclosing the traumatic incident to anyone. It was only when her grandmother noticed her pregnancy that the truth unravelled. Deeply concerned for her granddaughter’s well-being, the grandmother confronted the victim, who bravely recounted the horrifying experience.
Appalled by the revelation, the grandmother immediately reported the matter to the police, leading to the prompt arrest of Bongani Tshuma.
