Man’s angry outburst results in jail sentence for damaging property during domestic dispute
In a moment of intense anger, a man’s heated argument with his wife took a destructive turn when his girlfriend called while they were spending quality time together.
Create Ncube, a 27-year-old resident of Tshabalala suburb, unleashed his fury by running amok and smashing a TV set and water glasses onto the floor. These events unfolded during Ncube’s appearance before Western Commonage magistrate Mehluli Ncube, where he faced a charge of malicious damage to property.
Ncube pleaded guilty to the charge and was subsequently sentenced to nine months in jail. However, three months of the sentence were suspended on the condition that he avoids committing a similar offence within the next five years. Another three-month sentence was suspended on the condition that Ncube reimburses the value of the destroyed property, totalling US$103.
Additionally, the court suspended an additional three-month sentence on the condition that Ncube completes 105 hours of community service at Mtshane Primary School.
In a plea for leniency, Ncube expressed remorse for his actions and acknowledged that his behaviour was fuelled by intoxication. He also apologized to his wife and implored the magistrate not to imprison him, citing his role as the sole breadwinner.
During the court proceedings, Ncube’s wife testified, revealing the extent of the damage caused by her husband’s outburst. She stated, “We no longer have a TV at home after he came home drunk from a night out and shouted at me before he smashed it on the floor together with water glasses.” She further expressed her dissatisfaction with Ncube’s apology, insisting that he take responsibility for his actions by replacing the damaged property.
