In a devastating road accident along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Highway, 22 individuals lost their lives on Tuesday night. The collision occurred at the 27km peg when a southbound Toyota Quantum commuter omnibus collided head-on with a DAF truck. The impact was so severe that all occupants of the Toyota Quantum perished instantly, while the driver of the DAF truck and his passenger sustained injuries.
Yesterday, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national police spokesperson, released the names of 15 of the victims. Among them were Sadam Maenzane (31) from Old Magwegwe, Kifi Sphandla (48) from Nkulumane 5, Tobias Ncube (36) from Mbundane, Mehluli Sibanda (39) from Mpopoma, Gilbert Nyoni (45) from Entumbane, Ntutuko Mpofu (33) from Emganwini, Kylene Ndlovu (2) from Njube, and Vongai Tshuma (36) from Njube.
The remaining victims were identified as Jennifer Ndlovu (42) from New Magwegwe, Sibonginkosi Ndlovu (42) from Summerton, Ruth Mawonidze (33) from Nketa 9, Noah Haurambwe (40) from Pumula, Dumoluhle Ndlovu (36) from Luveve 5, Brian Phiri (44) from Ndiweni village in Kezi, and Aldrean Ndlalambi (46) from Mkoba 16 in Gweru.
Assistant Commissioner Nyathi appealed to the public for assistance in identifying the remaining seven victims. He urged anyone who had missing relatives traveling along that route on the day of the accident to contact the police.
