It seems the ongoing power struggle within Zimbabwe’s main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has taken another turn.
Sengezo Tshabangu, who claims to be the interim secretary-general of the party despite disputes over his legitimacy, has written to government authorities requesting control over state funding allocated to the CCC.
By law, political parties receiving at least 5% of the national vote are entitled to a proportional share of public financing. As one of only two parties to meet this threshold in the recent elections, the CCC is due to receive funds.
In his letter to the Justice Secretary, Mr. Tshabangu directed that this money be disbursed into a nominated bank account under his stewardship. He provided account details and affirmed his capacity to accept the funds on behalf of the CCC.
However, the party’s leadership continues to reject Mr. Tshabangu’s standing. His controversial recalls of various CCC representatives have only deepened tensions. It remains to be seen how the government will respond amid competing claims over who truly speaks for the opposition bloc.
