In a dramatic turn of events in Chitungwiza’s Unit A suburb, police shot and killed one of the suspects involved in an armed robbery that occurred in Southerton last week.
The suspect, identified as Sam Mudzuri (42), succumbed to injuries sustained during a shoot-out with police detectives.
According to Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the robbery took place on October 30, 2023, along Bryce Road in Harare. The victim, who was driving a Toyota Hilux, was intercepted by the suspects travelling in a Honda Fit vehicle. Armed with an unidentified pistol, a knife, and an iron bar, the suspects pointed the pistol at the victim before smashing the windows of the vehicle. They made off with a cellphone, an iPad, and US$250 in cash. The entire incident was captured on the victim’s dashboard camera.
Acting on received information, detectives from CID Homicide tracked down Mudzuri to his girlfriend’s residence in Unit A, Seke. A confrontation ensued, leading to an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the detectives. Mudzuri was shot in the legs and subsequently taken to a hospital in Harare where he later died.
The police are currently pursuing other suspects in connection with the armed robbery case. The individuals being sought include Paul Chinake (alias Pauros), Lovejoy (alias Shorty), Teddie, and Betto.
In a separate case, Raymond Chatama (21) was apprehended at Beitbridge Border Post as part of the police’s operation “No to cross-border crimes.” He was found in possession of a 0.22 Star pistol, along with a magazine containing 19 live rounds and a spent cartridge. Further investigations by CID Homicide Harare connected Chatama to four robbery cases that occurred between November 22 and December 26, 2022, in Ruwa.
Chatama implicated another suspect, Best Zuze (42), who was subsequently arrested on November 2, 2023, at the Zimbabwe Agricultural Showgrounds in Harare. The arrest led to the recovery of a 303 rifle, three pellet guns, and two television sets (55 inches and 32 inches).
The suspects are believed to be involved in a robbery at a plot in Ruwa where a family was attacked, resulting in the theft of US$350, two television sets, three cellphones, and a Toyota Hilux GD6. They are also linked to two separate robberies at supermarkets in Ruwa on November 22, 2022, where a total of US$1,511 and $10,000 were stolen. Additionally, the suspects are connected to a robbery at Kumusha Resort and Gardens in Ruwa on December 22, 2022, where US$510, three torches, and a Nexus generator were stolen.
In another case, Tawanda Chivizhe (28), Terrence Nyasha Mugocha (21), and Tawananyasha Kaguda (21) were arrested in connection with the murder of Panashe Nyamurowa (26). The incident occurred on the corner of Sixth Street and Samora Machel Avenue in Harare, where Nyamurowa confronted the suspects for allegedly stealing US$90 from a prostitute.
