Tragedy struck in Cross Dete on Monday morning when a mentally challenged man was fatally struck by an Extra City bus travelling from Harare to Victoria Falls. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the day, has left the community in a somber state.
The victim has been identified as Obriey Ndlovu, a 38-year-old resident of Ndangababi village under Chief Nekatambe. Eyewitnesses reported that Ndlovu walked across the road and was hit by the bus, resulting in his immediate death.
It was known among the locals that Ndlovu struggled with mental health issues and would occasionally exhibit violent and uncontrollable behaviour. Unfortunately, this time, his actions led to a fatal accident.
Following the incident, the body of the deceased was taken to the Hwange Colliery Hospital mortuary, while the bus involved was impounded at the Vehicle Inspection Department Hwange depot for further investigation.
Inspector Glory Banda, the spokesperson for Matabeleland North Police, confirmed the accident and assured that no passengers on the bus were injured.
This tragic event has cast a dark cloud over the community of Cross Dete, reminding everyone of the importance of road safety and raising awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with mental health conditions.
