Tragedy struck at the Food Lovers Market in Greendale, Harare, when a security guard accidentally shot and killed his colleague during a change of guard.
The incident, believed to be a tragic accident, has led to Privilege Chivanganye, 28, being charged with culpable homicide in relation to the death of Jaison Dhlamini on October 23.
According to ZimLive, Chivanganye appeared before Harare magistrate Themba Kuwanda on Saturday. He was granted bail of US$80 and remanded until November 17. The court proceedings shed light on the events leading to the unfortunate incident.
According to Ephraim Zinyandu, the prosecutor, Chivanganye was in the process of handing over to the evening shift at 6 PM when he informed Dhlamini about an issue with the Taurus revolver firearm. Subsequently, Chivanganye handed over the gun along with six rounds of ammunition.
The prosecution’s account states that Dhlamini attempted to load the firearm but encountered a problem. Both men tried to address the issue, but tragically, during this process, Chivanganye accidentally squeezed the trigger, resulting in a single shot being fired into Dhlamini’s stomach. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Dhlamini succumbed to his injuries.
