A police officer stationed in Beitbridge and his alleged accomplice have been apprehended on suspicion of car theft after being discovered in a bush with a South African-registered vehicle for which they could not provide a valid explanation.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Lane Farai Chidhakwa (36), who serves at the Makhadho Police base, and Vincent Luwizhi (29) from Mabvuku in Harare.
It is reported that Chidhakwa acted as an escort while Luwizhi drove the vehicle, suspected to have been stolen in South Africa. The pair came under the scrutiny of law enforcement officers deployed to combat cross-border crime when they evaded a security roadblock at Makhado, located 80 kilometers west of Beitbridge.
The crime docket, registered as CR 10/10/23, lists charges of vehicle theft and smuggling against the two suspects. They managed to evade authorities at the Beitbridge border post before their subsequent arrest.
The suspects are scheduled to appear in court today to face the charges brought against them. Further updates on the case will be provided as they become available.
