A 29-year-old soldier has been sentenced to prison for robbing a tuckshop owner in Plumtree, Matabeleland South province.
Ezra Ncube was handed a two-year jail term, with one year conditionally suspended, by magistrate Joshua Nembaware on Monday.
According to prosecutor Arnold Mudekunye, the incident occurred on October 10 when Ncube was seated with Patience Hedebe (30) and her colleague on the veranda of her tuckshop. In a startling turn of events, Ncube entered the tuckshop brandishing an axe and proceeded to steal US$40 and ZAR668. He threatened Hedebe with the axe during the robbery.
Subsequently, a police report was filed, leading to Ncube’s arrest.
