A terrible boat accident occurred this past weekend on Lake Kariba, the largest man-made lake in the world.
On Saturday, a motorboat carrying four passengers capsized near Tsetse Island. According to officials from Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife, three people are still missing after the incident.
Tinashe Farawo, a spokesperson for the wildlife authority, confirmed that their reaction team and local police are searching the area for the missing trio. One person did manage to swim to safety after the small vessel overturned. The rescued passenger has not been identified at this time.
Initial information from the investigation revealed the capsized boat was chartered by a woman named Nyaradzai Nyakuenda. She had hired the boat’s operator to transport her and her groceries from Kariba to Gache Gache. Tragically, as they were travelling across the lake loaded down with supplies, the boat capsized with Nyakuenda and two others still onboard.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi of the police stated search operations are ongoing.
Sadly, accidents of this nature have become more common on Lake Kariba in recent years. Just last month, four individuals lost their lives when their boat flipped between two campsites.
