Mine Collapse in Zimbabwe Leaves Six Dead
Tragedy struck in Zimbabwe’s Chegutu district on Friday when part of a gold mine collapsed, trapping workers underground. Six miners lost their lives in the terrible accident at Bay Horse mine, located about 100km outside the capital of Harare.
State media reported that at around 8am, a section of the 150m deep shaft gave way, burying 34 men beneath rubble and debris. Rescue efforts got underway immediately to save who they could. By nightfall, six bodies had been pulled out, but another 15 miners were still trapped with the search continuing.
Initially, 13 workers managed to escape the collapse on their own, leaving 21 unaccounted for. The Zimbabwe Miners Federation had stated an estimated 42 men may have been inside at the time. They dispatched representatives to the site to aid the rescue coordination.
This part of Zimbabwe has seen its share of mining tragedies before, such as a dam break two years ago that cost 23 men their lives in a nearby town.
