Tragic Incident Claims Lives of Two Students in Chitungwiza
In a devastating incident near Manyame Park in Chitungwiza, two students tragically drowned while swimming in the Hunyani River. The victims, a Grade 5 student and a Form 3 student, were accompanied by another student who was fortunate enough to be rescued by a woman doing her laundry along the riverbank.
Inspector Webster Dzvova, the Harare provincial deputy police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, stating that the bodies of the two students were recovered the next day. The bodies have been taken to Chitungwiza Central Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.
According to Inspector Dzvova, it was reported that the students had ventured to the river after school. This tragic event serves as a reminder for parents and guardians to caution children about the potential dangers of swimming in rivers and shallow pits.
While the incident has been attributed to drowning, a resident of Manyame Park speculated that the students may have fallen victim to mermaids. The resident claimed that there have been previous drownings in the same area and even mentioned a recent incident where a woman, believed to be involved in rituals, disappeared at the river.
“There are mermaids in Hunyani River. This is the second time children have drowned while swimming at the same spot.
“Two weeks ago, a woman believed to have been conducting rituals disappeared at the same area,” said the resident.
