Four Drown as Boat Capsizes in Lake Kariba
A tragic boating accident occurred last Saturday near Tsetse Island on Lake Kariba. A small boat carrying five people capsized under unknown circumstances. Fishermen thankfully rescued one survivor clinging to a floating container.
After extensive search efforts, the bodies of the other four passengers were eventually recovered. They have since been identified as Sergeant Tatenda Nekati and Corporal Nxobile Ncube of the Zimbabwe National Army, along with Kariba residents Trust Phiri and Adson Mupiringano.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the victims’ names and said their remains were taken to the local mortuary. An investigation is ongoing to determine the full cause of the accident. Some local fishermen speculated high waves could be involved.
At the time of the incident, ZimParks representative Tinashe Farawo acknowledged search and rescue operations were underway. He praised the fishermen who found the lone survivor but lamented that the four others remained missing and were feared dead.
Tragically, this is not the first such accident on Lake Kariba. Five lives were also lost in July 2021 when another small boat capsized in the same area. With the lake seeing increased recreational activity, authorities remind all users to exercise caution and safety while out on the water.
