President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called top public officials to a high-level meeting today to map out Zimbabwe’s development pathway under his second term in office.
The meeting will bring together Cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, permanent secretaries, chief executive officers, and chairpersons of parastatals and local authorities. According to Permanent Secretary Solomon Mhlanga, it aims to set the administration’s strategic direction as Mnangagwa kicks off another stint at the helm.
Mnangagwa initially rose to power in 2017 following Robert Mugabe’s ouster. He has sought to turn Zimbabwe’s fortunes around after years of economic turmoil and strengthen state institutions. His government unveiled Vision 2030, which targets upper-middle income status by that year.
While progress has been slow, Mnangagwa’s re-election offers continuity. The mass gathering of government leadership is unprecedented and underscores his hands-on leadership style. It presents an opportunity to align diverse stakeholders behind a unified agenda.
In his inauguration speech, Mnangagwa pledged to serve all citizens with integrity, accelerate living standard upgrades especially in rural areas, and build on initiatives from his first term. Areas like agriculture, infrastructure and poverty reduction will feature prominently.
Efficient implementation across ministries and state bodies will be critical. Macroeconomic stability, respect for the rule of law and improved governance are also seen as important for attracting investment and broader support that Zimbabwe’s development aspirations depend on.
By rallying top managers around clear national priorities, analysts say today’s meeting could strengthen policy coherence. Success will rely on overcoming entrenched social and economic challenges that have long held the country back.
