A heartbreaking case of violence occurred this week in the mining town of Zvishavane, Zimbabwe. A two-year-old boy was stabbed by his own mother, for reasons not yet known.
The boy was attacked on Tuesday morning around 8am, according to police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko. The mother, identified as Mildness Mukoshomi, had just returned home from work when she took her son into the bedroom. She then allegedly stabbed the toddler in the stomach with a kitchen knife.
The boy’s cries were heard by a neighbour, Jeremiah Mutunhira, who rushed to check if everything was okay. When Mutunhira forced open the locked bedroom door, he found the bleeding child on the floor, with the mother standing over him holding the knife.
The injured boy was rushed to the hospital in Gweru and remains in serious condition as of this reporting. Mukoshomi has been arrested and charged with attempted murder. She appeared in court where she was remanded into police custody pending further investigation.
Insp Mahoko urged the public to make use of the ZRP Community Relations and Liaison Offices which are found at every police station when they have issues they feel they can not disclose to relatives and friends to avoid such incidences.
